Hero

7/6/2015

Another day of not very much sleep the night before. Something that most people don’t know about me is I struggle with sleep. I’m not sure if it runs in the Tracy family or not, but I do know that there are quite a few of us that don’t sleep well. Usually when I can’t sleep, I turn on a movie on my DVR or something from Apple TV because, let’s face it, in the middle of the night even the commercials are too racy. Last night I chose the movie “Olympus has Fallen”. This is with Gerard Butler and was a fantastic movie. I will say it’s probably not safe to watch outside of TV as it has a lot of swearing, but in this case, it was recorded off of TV and was really great.
The premise of the movie was about a secret service man who was on the detail to protect the President. His detail got changed due to a failure but he comes in to save the day later in the movie as a one man wrecking crew. He single handedly takes down 40 highly trained terrorists. It was a very good movie but, at the same time, a little over stretched. Now it wasn’t like a Rambo movie where he takes on 100 guys with nothing but a bow and some explosive arrows, but it definitely stretched the boundaries.

I only bring this up because, in watching this movie, I got to thinking, “What is a HERO?” I have heard of so many people who lay their lives down for what they believe in, and I admire them for it. A person who is willing to lay his or her life down for a belief or a person has admirable qualities. There are so many people who do this every day. I don’t want to get into a political debate or a debate about beliefs, but think about it.  All the men and women who have died for the sake of something they believe in or someone they were trying to protect or fight for. It’s like that saying, “We don’t go to war because of the hate of those in front of us but for the love of those behind us.”

My sons and I were watching a sniper documentary the other day on the History Channel, and my one son said, “How can a sniper just kill so many people he doesn’t know, almost like a video game?” I thought about this for a while because, not only was he willing to give his own life, but he was willing to take another life for what he believed in. Truth is, those snipers probably didn’t even know the true political debate they were there for, but he did know one thing that was spoken over and over in that show. For every person he had to kill, another of his men could have been saved because of that. It is a hard concept to see sometimes, but that man was a hero to his company. He saved their lives many times over again by protecting them from what could have been.

I bring this up because I see all of these political things I am supposed to fight for and all of these beliefs I am supposed to lay my life down for. I feel like God didn’t say, “Fight for a belief, but instead, fight for your love of Me and your love of fellow man”. I don’t want to fight for a belief, but for the people God has entrusted to me. I want to go to war everyday so that they truly see the love of God through me. I want to save their lives many times over again taking out, if needed, things that get in their paths. I want to work for them to see them succeed in life, and I truly want them to know of me as a hero.

Our lives are very short in the big picture of things. Our minuscule 70-80 years on this earth aren’t going to have much of a dent in this world unless we invest in the lives of those entrusted to us and teach them to do the same. Our teaching and our heroism will speak through the ages. I want to give my life for God and the people around me to be a true hero. I want to fight for those people and will continue to fight until there is not a breath left in me.

Will you be a Hero living for God, for the people you love and who God has entrusted to you??  Stand with me! Let’s not go to war for the hate of the people in front of us, but instead fight for those behind us. Be a hero to someone today. Help change his or her life for eternity by investing in them and even fighting off enemies if need be. Fight for them, that is a true hero to me.
